Symptom scan
What changed at the tap?
- No hot water or a shorter supply than normal
- Water temperature rises and falls unexpectedly
- Popping, rumbling, or hissing from the unit
- Rust-colored or cloudy hot water
- Moisture at a connection, valve, or tank base
Keep clear of electrical and gas hazards.
Do not touch wet electrical components. If you smell gas, leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location. Do not relight or disassemble equipment.
Hard water can leave clues.
Mineral accumulation can contribute to noise, reduced hot-water capacity, and efficiency loss. Tank condition, age, access, and the failed component still determine whether repair or replacement is sensible.
